Rejoice today my sisters! It is a day to remember, to reflect and to resolve that we are stronger today, we are a proud people today, and we are more powerful today, because of the selfless work of this man whom we celebrate!

I am hopeful that we, as proud black women, are sharing our rich heritage and history with our children on a regular basis. We really can’t leave it up to our public school system to make sure that they know who they truly are and the greatness that exists inside them. It is not their job to do that anyway, it is ours.

There is so much for them to know, even beginning with our own family histories. I find myself constantly using the phrase “when I was a little girl…” while spending time with my granddaughters. It seems to be more important to me every day that they know where they came from and that there is truly something special inside each one of them. And it’s on us to be their example, their life coaches, their motivators, their educators. I am not saying that we have all knowledge and all the answers, but we do have the resources to find what we know they need! Workshops, libraries, churches, youth groups, it’s available and we MUST!

We must so that they can be all that God created them to be. We must so that they have the information that they need to make good life choices. We must so that the positive will ultimately over ride and supersede the negative forces that are constantly at work to make our children feel “less than”. Less than intelligent, less than talented, less than able to do anything that they set their minds to. Oh no! We MUST let them know that they can do, they can be, they can achieve if they believe.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15th in the year 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. The year 1929? In the deep south? But God had a calling on his life and his parents exposed him to the TRUTH. Letting him know that he could do anything if he believed and look at what he accomplished. Of course he didn’t do it alone, but he took the initiative and he took the lead to bring about change for us as a people in this country. And for that we CELEBRATE!

So if you are at home or out in the community enjoying the holiday today, make sure to share the TRUTH with your children about this holiday and why it exists. Share his speeches with your children or other young people in your life. Sing a chorus of “Happy Birthday to Ya! Happy Birthday to Ya! Happy Birthday!”

“Now it doesn’t make much sense, there ought to be a law against, anyone who takes offense, at a day in your celebration. ‘Cause we all know in our minds, that there ought to be a time, that we can set aside to show just how much we love you. And I’m sure you would agree, what could fit more perfectly, than to have a world party on the day you came to be…” Steve Wonder
